A chest tube (chest drain, thoracic catheter, tube thoracostomy, or intercostal drain) is a flexible plastic tube that is inserted through the chest wall and into the pleural space or mediastinum. It is used to remove air pneumothorax, fluid (blood mucus etc.), or pus empyema from the intrathoracic space.

Overview

STANDARD CHEST TUBE LIMITATIONS

  1. Emergency placement of current chest tubes take 3-8 mins to place effectively, resulting compromised brain function and loss of life.
  2. Suturing does not hold chest tubes in place properly and can cause greater discomfort to the patient once stabilized
  3. Current chest tubes slide out of the place requiring more chest tubes to be placed for the same patient.
  4. Chest kits are cumbersome and have two many steps to rapidly deploy in seconds
  5. Custom chest kits, which include numerous items required to operate the chest tube, can be very expensive to purchase
